Year 5

smiley   Welcome to Year 5   smiley

A warm welcome to the Year 5 class page.

We are looking forward to seeing you all starting on Thursday 3rd September.

Year 5 will be starting school at 8:45 and finishing at 3:15. An adult from the year 5 team will meet the children at the big gate onto the school grass field from George Street. We will then check their temperature using a thermometer to the wrist. When the children arrive in the school building, they will be washing their hands and provided with hand sanitizer. This will be repeated throughout the day.

Staff

Mrs Freestone (Mon/Tues class teacher)

Mrs Stafford (Wed/Thur/Fri class teacher)

Mrs Fixter and Mrs Lambert (teaching assistants)

PE

PE will be on a Tuesday and the children are to come in school on this day in their PE kit: school jumper, plain navy/black/grey jogging trousers or shorts and a plain white/navy/black/grey T-shirt with trainers is expected. PE will be done outside, weather permitted.

Reading

Children are to bring their book bags into school with just their book bag and reading diary inside. They will be given a new book on Monday and change them on Thursday if needed. The books have to be quarantined which is why we are setting days to change reading books.

Learning and well-being

The main focus for the first half term is to help settle your child back into school after such a long period out of education. There will be many opportunities to share and discuss their lock-down experiences, worries and support with gaps in learning.

Our topic this term is ‘We are going to War time Europe.’ We have lots of exciting learning planned across all subjects linked to this topic.

Contact

Due to the school following guidelines to ensure the safety of the whole school community, communication will be different to what we are used to with parents/carers. If you have any questions or need to pass on information please do not hesitate to contact us via email: lfreestone@loverslane.notts.sch.uk and jstafford@loverslane.notts.sch.uk we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Finally, we want to reassure you and your child that it is normal to feel anxious about the return to school. We are doing everything possible to make sure the transition back is as smooth as possible and we know the children will be excited to see their friends and start learning again. Please see the link below to a story about returning to school.

We look forward to seeing you all back at Lovers’ Lane.

Happy Thursday kids, its nearly the weekend!

Just a reminder asking you to send me photos of your work if you can. I love to see them and I'm not receiving many at the moment sad xx

So today...

  • we are sticking with the Fathers day theme (you can choose a different male adult if you prefer) and I would like you to create an acrostic poem. When we worked on poetry last term, lots of you said you wanted to do this, so now is your chance. Its a poem so there aren't many rules. You could just write one word after the capital letter or a phrase or even a sentence. Be creative with your punctuation and graphology ( this is how you write the words-remember?) Present it beautifully and you could even buy a frame and give it as a father's day present! I've done one as an example below!
  • complete your Thursday maths
  • practise your spellings
  • have a go at a new breathe
  • take yourself to a happy destination by completing the "Fantasy island" art work. You will need this tomorrow so please do a great job!

Thursday 7th May

Hello petals before I give you today's work, have a look at Zoe's fabulous work from yesterday and work sent in from Kaylee.

Lovely to see girls. Well done xxxx yessmileyheart

For English today I would like you to plan the main parts of a story based on The Legend of King Midas. Have a look at how I have "boxed up" the important details in the story of King Midas. Then look at how I have changed the details to create my own story. In your books I would like you to copy your own column ( just like the ones I have made) with your ideas about main characters, setting, wishes etc... We are going to use these ideas next week to create our own cartoon strips and stories so think carefully!

I have added this weeks spellings so please start practising these ready for an adult to test you next Wednesday.

This Friday there is a bank holiday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE day (this is the day that marks the Victory in Europe, at the end of the second world war). Please watch the video clip below to find out all about it and complete the reading comprehension.

To celebrate this day many commemorative plates and cups were made. Please design your own commemorative cup to celebrate the end of war in Europe.

There are links to three new breathes below for this week. The password is the same as last week.

Please complete your Thursday maths from Mrs Freestone too, she loves to see your work! xxx

Good morning lovelies, another week in lock down! I hope you are all coping well. Here is some more smashing work to keep your brains working! wink

For English I would like you to watch the animation of King Midas from last week again and take notes choosing the 5 main events. Next, I would like you to create a comic strip of these main events like the one below. I have filled the first box in for you so that you can see what I mean ( I couldn't draw a picture though so I used an image from the cartoon!) Be careful to make sure you choose 5 MAIN events that re-tell the story!

For reading and topic I would like you to read the information about how the ancient Greeks started democracy. We still have democracy in many countries today, including the UK ( so thank you ancient Greeks). This means that everyone  -over 18- has a right to vote for a government to rule the country. When you have read the information I would like you to draw two columns in your book. In one column draw and label the people who were allowed to vote and in the other, draw and label the people who weren't allowed to vote. As a challenge could you sort the statements comparing "Democracy in Ancient Greece and Democracy in the UK today"

Also today, please complete your Wednesday maths and have a breathe! I think that's plenty so I will put the spellings on tomorrow xxxxx

Come on boys, send me some pics!!!

For your work today I would like you to watch a couple of videos.

The first one is a short animation telling the Legend of King Midas, who we now know was a foolish but kind king who needed to learn a very important lesson.

The second video is a "skittles" advert.

I would like you to watch both of the videos and then answer these questions about the King Midas animation in your book:

  • Where is it set?
  • Who are the main characters?
  • Why does Midas get his wish?
  • What is the problem?
  • How is it resolved?
  • What is the moral?
  • How is the skittle advert similar to the King Midas legend?

You will need this information next week so don't lose it!

Could you also please compete your Friday maths from Mrs Freestone and practise your spellings. Of course you should have a go at a new breathe and spend some time reading a good book too!

Who do you think the man is?

Where is he?

How is he feeling?

Why is he feeling like this?

Where is he?

What has just happened?

What might happen next?

For your art today I would like you to draw me a Greek vase. There was no plastic in Ancient Greek times and pottery was used to store food and drinks. The pottery was beautifully decorated and patterned. It was sometimes painted with pictures from everyday life and sometimes painted with stories. Look at the pictures below. Next, please click on the video link below to watch a super video showing you have to draw a Greek vase really effectively. Then you can try to draw your own. Good luck!
Here is a punctuation revision activity I would like you to do.
Finally please remember to do your Thursday maths from Mrs Freestone and have a Breathe! Have fun xxxx

Today I would like you continue some of the Spanish work you were doing with Mrs Holland.

You were looking at Spanish artists and you are going to find out about Antoni Gaudi.

The reading comprehension tells you all about him but there are some tricky words that I will help you with.

Architect = someone who designs buildings

modernist = art that was made in brand new ways and styles

Assignment = job

Entrepreneur = business person

Regarded = thought of

There are also lots of Spanish names so try your best with them!

When you have answered the questions I would like you to look at the pictures of his work

His work is very beautiful and inspired by nature. I would like you to draw the outline of any natural object or animal ( like the ones below or it could be a flower or river or any natural object) and using cut-up coloured paper, decorate the pictures using his "trencadis technique" - you can draw the technique if you don't have coloured paper.

I can't wait to see your work.

Science Monday 30th March

This is our final lesson on the development of humans, so we are going to recap on everything we have learnt and then an activity to show your understanding.

First watch this clip to remind yourself of the stages of development

How do humans change during their lifetime?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zgssgk7/articles/z2msv4j

Then using the information from the video and website create a comic strip to show the differences in each stage, you can make it informative and formal or funny and informal- it is a way for you to remember each stage.

I look forward to seeing these! smiley (Below is an example template of a comic strip for you to draw into your books)

Thanks for the fantastic work Zoe. Keep up the super work xxx

Breaking news!!!
David Walliams is reading his books and you can access them free online! Please look for this as he will probably be reading The Boy in a Dress so we can hear what happened next! Xx

Keeley's beautiful barge picture! xx

More fantastic work! Well done Zoe it's great! xxx

Fantastic geography and art from Keeley. Beautiful work!

More photos of the super work I've been sent so far. Thank you so much Skye, Zoe and Keeley. Keep going kids you're doing great!!

Friday 27th March

Morning kids, I hope this week is keeping you busy at home and that you are managing to get exercise too. Joe Wicks does a workout at 9am on you tube every morning which is really good.Give it a try.

Also today, remember to practice your spellings again - I will ask you next Wednesday to see if an adult in your house can test you on them.

Find some quiet time to do your music breathing.

English warm up.

Look at the painting below and answer these questions ( you will have to use your imagination but use the picture to look for clues too!)

Where could the barge be going?

Where has it been?

Who is inside?

Why did they want to go on a barge holiday?

Are they enjoying themselves? Why/why not?

Draw a picture of how it might look inside?

Would you like to go on a barge? Why/why not?

English

Read the persuasive leaflet encouraging people to visit Budapest.

Find and copy six positive reasons the writer has included for visiting Budapest.

Now I would like you to look at the pictures below of people on a Barge Holiday. What positive reasons can you think of for going on a Barge Holiday?

Write at least 6 reasons - bullet points - why a Barge holiday would be fun/good for you and your family. You might want to brainstorm this with an adult who you live with.

Friday Maths

Have a go at the number bonds to 1000 challenge. Time yourself then try again later to see if you can beat your time. I'll show the answers tomorrow.

Art

Finally, today I would love you to create a beautiful barge picture for me  (there are some examples below). It could be set on the River Trent next to the castle maybe! Your barge can be as decorated and fancy as you like. I can't wait to see them!smiley

Thursday 26th March

Good morning lovelies.

Today's work should also include practice of your spellings and at least 20 minutes reading a good book! I'm loving my reading time, I hope you are too!

A Music Breathe is included today to keep us calm and relaxed. Read through the sheet first then try doing it yourself. Make sure you are somewhere quiet and ask your family to please not disturb you for five minutes.

Here are the answers to yesterdays reading comprehension. Well done x

Reading Comprehension

You reading comprehension is a persuasive text about a Hotel. Please read the text and answer the questions in your book.

English

For English today you are going to learn about comparative and superlative adjectives. These are words that are often used in persuasive texts. They compare things. Read the power point to find out about them then complete the worksheet. Be careful though you might need to check the spelling of some of the words ending in "y". What do you notice?

There are songs about superlatives and comparatives on you tube.

Now please write 10 sentences using some of these words. Try to use different sentence openers. You could also include parenthesis, questions and commands.E.g

1. Playing football makes me the happiest girl in the world!

2. Will it be sunnier tomorrow than today?

3. The rainbow I drew -which is brilliant- is the brightest in the street.

Art

For our art this week I would like us to join the "rainbow trail" and create a rainbow window display to spread hope during this difficult time. Children all around the country are doing this and I have seen some lovely ones in the streets where I live. Look at the pictures below for ideas. You could use crayons, felt tips, paints or collage. Please send me some pictures to put on the website. Enjoy xx

Here is a brilliant example of the English work that Keeley has sent me this morning! Fantastic work Keeley xx

Science

In Science we have been learning about the development of humans during their life. Today we are looking at gestation period (which is how long the parent is pregnant before baby is born)

Draw your first timeline and make a prediction by writing each of the animals where you think they will go (human, frog, goldfish, snake, whale, parrot, salmon, lizard)

Then draw a second timeline and use the table underneath (to see the answers) and order these on the second timeline, were your predictions correct?

Extension

Can you see any link between the shortest and longest? Size of animal? If the animal lives in water?

You can do some more research on the internet about the gestation period of other animals and create something (poster, writing, labelled drawing) to send me! I will be more than happy to receive any emails with your work/pictures, they will be lovely to see. Mrs Freestone
