Using 'Talk for write' strategies we will be learning and using different story structures to through the year.

Each week we build spelling knowledge, using Read Write Inc spellings.

Each day there will be whole class reading, either in English lessons, other curriculum subjects or as guided reading sessions (focusing on specific comprehension skills)  Please make sure that reading books are in school every day.

June 2022

So, here are our final portraits! We were inspired by "Charles I in Three Positions" by Anthony Van Dyke. First we created a Gustav Klimt inspired background with water colour and poster paint, then we used our drawing skills to draw 3 portraits. I think year 5 did a great job. Those side profiles were really tricky! yes  smiley

June 2022.

Last week we had a fantastic day at Newark Civil War Centre. We had a lovely picnic in the sun and learned so much! We found out that Newark was the last Royalist town standing, that King Charles and Prince Rupert had a huge argument in Greggs ( the Governors house!) we handled artefacts found in Newark and even had a battle! Later we had a walk around town to see the legacy of the Civil War.

We have finished our Lady of Shalott writing unit and created our own "Warning Tales"

Fantastic writing year five and beautiful images of different scenes too.yes

In RE this term we are learning about the religion of Islam. This week we found out that Muslims follow the Five Pillars of Islam and we made posters showing what each of these pillars means. Lovely work year 5! smiley

In our art lessons this half term we are practising portrait drawing. To end this topic we will be completing a Civil War inspired portrait - look out for pictures of them at a later date! To get ready for this we have been practising drawing different facial features and getting the proportions and spacing correct. Pretty good already I think!! wink

Summer English:

The Lady of Shalott

We are reading the fantastic Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson.

Today we made a "Tunnel of Advice" for our Lady ( Mrs Watts! ) and told her why we thought she should or shouldn't look out of the window at Sir Lancelot!! Well done year 5 you were all very convincing with your opinions! Unfortunately she looked!!!!

Summer Term

This term our new history topic is called "We are going to Newark in the 1600s"

We will be finding out about life in Newark during the 1600s. It was an exciting and dangerous time and we will find out how important our town was during the English Civil wars.

We have started our topic by ordering this period of time on a timeline of important world events.

Design and Technology

We have been very busy this term designing, planning and making fabric collages. We looked at the work of textile artist Mandy Pattullo for inspiration then designed our own beautiful collages. The sewing was difficult but we all persevered and the results are great. Year 5 can all be super proud of themselves smileyyes

March 2022

This week in Geography we have been learning about how higher ground is shown on maps. We created our own contour relief models to help us understand how contour lines work smiley

March 2022

Last week as part of our "River Deep and Mountain High" geography topic, we took a trip along the River Trent. Adrian from the Canals and Rivers Trust came into school and made a model of a river's journey with us. We learned lots of new geographical language and found out lots of information. Next, we walked along the river and Adrian told us all about the River Trent and it's bridges in Newark. We were then invited into the lock house by the lock manager Jane. She taught us about locks and let us open and close the lock gates ( which are 5 tonnes each!) It was a great day that ended with a came of Pooh sticks!  smiley

March 2022

We have been writing beautiful poems inspired by Kit Wright's The magic Box. Have a read, they are fantastic! x

Our English unit has been all about writing suspense tales!!!  We used different techniques such as repetition, cliff hangers, hidden threat, rhetorical questions and show don't tell. You will be on the edge of your seat reading these!laugh

More fabulous Geography work. We've been learning about the water cycle, where some major rivers of the world are located and finding out what amazing sights there are in the world yes
