Year 2

Welcome to the Year 2 class page

A warm welcome to the Year 2 class page. We are looking forward to seeing you all starting on Thursday 3rd September.

Year 2 will be starting school at 8:45 and finishing at 3:15. An adult from the year 2 team will meet the children at the small gate with the keypad at the front entrance. We will then check their temperature using a thermometer to the wrist. When the children arrive in the school building, they will be washing their hands and provided with hand sanitizer. This will be repeated throughout the day.

Staff

Mrs Graham (class teacher/Assistant Head/SENCO) and Mrs Potter (teaching assistant)

Mrs Potter and Mrs Nicholson will cover PPA (Planning, preparation and Assessment) time on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Lambert will teach PE.

Mrs Watts will cover management time on Thursdays.

PE

PE will be on Wednesday and the children are to come in school on this day in their PE kit: school jumper, plain navy/black/grey jogging trousers or shorts and a plain white/navy/black/grey T-shirt with trainers is expected. PE will be done outside, weather permitted. We will review the additional indoor PE session over the term, alongside government guidelines.

Reading

Your child will be given a reading book once we have assessed all the children on their phonics. They will have a book on Mondays and change them on Thursdays. The Read Write Inc. books need to be read on three separate occasions so they are able to read it fluently. The books have to be quarantined which is why we are setting days to change reading books. More support on phonics at home will come later in the term.

Learning and well-being

The main focus for the first half term is to help settle your child back into school after such a long period out of education. There will be many opportunities to share and discuss their lock-down experiences, worries and support with gaps in learning.

Our topic this term is ‘We are going to Africa’. We have lots of exciting learning planned across all subjects linked to this topic.

Contact

Due to the school following guidelines to ensure the safety of the whole school community, communication will be different to what we are used to with parents/carers. If you have any questions or need to pass on information please do not hesitate to contact me via email: agraham@loverslane.notts.sch.uk and I will get back to you at the nearest opportunity.

Finally, we want to reassure you and your child that it is normal to feel anxious about the return to school. We are doing everything possible to make sure the transition back is as smooth as possible and we know the children will be excited to see their friends and start learning again. Please see the link below to a story about returning to school.

We look forward to seeing you all back at Lovers’ Lane.

You can use the sheet provided to map these or you can list them in your home learning book. Try to find them on a map too if you are writing them though!

Welcome back year 2! I can't believe we are in the final half term of summer! I hope you all had a lovely week and have enjoyed the weather. Send me photos of what you have been doing in the last week so you can see each other through our class page. If you want to send messages to your class friends I can do this too.

Let's get started with our home learning for the day.

Monday 1st June 2020

English - Rainbows are everywhere at moment so let's have a look at these in our Enlgish work. Today is finding out what you know about rainbows. Use the picture below to write your ideas in your home learning book. Tomorrow we will look at the answers to these. I have included the whole booklet in the link below.

Maths - Flashback 4 to go over previous areas of maths. Carrying on with the times tables and today is all about the 10s. Remember to watch the video first as this will support your learning.

Science - We continue looking at animals today. This time you are looking at carnivores (meat eaters), herbivores (plant eaters) and omnivores (plant and meat eaters). There are 6 animals in each set to sort. If you don't have a printer, don't worry, you can draw or name the animals into the correct groups. You may need to do a little research. The answers are in the link below to check your choices once you have completed the task.

Please make sure you send me a quick email to let me know how you are - it has been far too long since I have seen you so an email to know you are ok or if you need anything would be great!

HALF TERM WEEK

Happy half term to all my lovely Year 2s and all your families.

I have put some ideas of activities for you to explore and set some activities on Purple Mash for you to have a go at.

If you can send me any pictures of your half term adventures, whatever they may be, I will add them to the photos for this week.

Hope you all have a relaxing week and of course contact me if you need anything. Please send me a 'hello' email just to let me know you are safe by Friday 29th.

Take care all of you!

Friday 22nd May 2020

The last day of work today as it is 'half term' next week. I will be putting some activity ideas on the class page for the week.

English - Spelling time today. Practice spelling the year 1 and year 2 words that are in your home learning book. How many can you spell now? You can choose a few to work on and do the 'Look, say, cover, write, check' method. Extend this to putting the word into a sentence. Practice your handwriting at the same time.

Reading - The final chapter and quiz for the story 'Sam and the Wet day' is on Purple Mash.

Maths - Flashback 4 warmup. Today I have set some maths games to help you practice your maths skills on Purple Mash.

PSHE - I have added to the picture below some feelings cards. You can either talk about your ideas for each or write them in your home learning book.

Hope you all have a very lovely weekend and please do stay safe.

Thursday 21st May 2020

English - Now you have written and edited your letter it is time to present the final draft. You could type this or write it and then decorate it in an Elf like way! Make sure handwriting is beautiful and take your time - just as we do in class. I look forward to seeing your final letters to Mr and Mrs Cobbler.

Reading - Chapter 4 of 'Sam and the Wet day' has been set for you on Purple Mash - no quiz with this one (not sure why!).

Maths - Flashback 4 warmup. Yestserday was 2 times tables and today is the 5 times tables. Remember to use the video link below to help you.

RE - Today we are looking at the story of The Good Samaritan. There are questions to answer about the story. Please note those of you that are printing out, only pick one of the three stars as I don't want you to waste paper/ink!

Take 5 - Competition time - have a look at the leaflet in the picture. Send your entries to me. Here is today's breathing videos for you to try also.

Enjoy the lovely weather too and take care.

Wednesday 20th May 2020

English - Now you have written your first draft of the letter from the Elves/Elf to Mr and Mrs Cobbler, it is time to read through it and check it. Use a different coloured pen to do this. Is the punctuation correct? Do you have capital letters and full stops, question marks or exclamation marks? Commas in a list? Plenty of description by using adjectives? Today is all about making your letter even better. All writers do this process and a writer is what you are!

Reading - Chapter 3 is ready and waiting for you on Purple Mash with a quiz. There are only three questions so make sure you read the text carefully.

Maths - Flashback 4 warm up. Today (alongside a video to watch) we are looking at the 2 times table.

Music - This has been set on Purple Mash and is called 'Making a beat'. There is a video on here explaining what to do which is in the top right corner just before the 'back' arrow. I look forward to hearing your beats!

Hope you all have a great day! I haven't had any pictures this week so please send them to me.

Tuesday 19th May 2020

English - Yesterday you developed a story map for your ideas to write a letter back to Mr and Mrs Cobbler the Shoe Makers. You were asked to draw out your ideas of what the three Elves could have been up to. Today we are going to use this to write out our draft for the letter. Pretend you are one of the Elves to explain what you have been doing. Think about the letters we have written before. Open the letter with a friendly starter, for example:

Dear Mr and Mrs Cobbler,

It is so lovely to hear that you have opened a new shop! How exciting! You deserve this because you have worked so hard.

You can then start explaining the Elves adventures in the letter. Can you include a question, commas in a list and plenty of adjectives? Make sure sentences open with a capital letter and they will finish with either a fulll stop, exclamation mark or a question if something is being asked. Make sure you close the letter properly too. You could end with a question. Remember this is just the first draft and tomorrow we will look at it again.

Maths - Flashback 4 to warm up. Today we are looking at using arrays. There is a video link below to help with this.

Reading - A 'To Do' is ready and waiting for you on Purple Mash and it is the 2nd chapter and quiz for the story ' Sam and the Wet day'. A special well done to Ethan and Gabriela who have done chapter 1!

Art - Rainbows are everywhere at the moment and I have set a rainbow challenge for you on Purple Mash. For those of you that are getting outside I have also set an art challege to create a picture using natural objects. An example is in the pictures below. Make sure you take a picture and send it to me for the photo section.

Monday 18th May 2020

Welcome to another week of home learning. I hope you had a lovely weekend!

English - On Friday you designed new outfits for the Elves in the story we read 'The Elves and the Shoe Makers'. Today there is a letter from the Shoe Makers below. They have now opened a new shop! Mr and Mrs Cobbler would like to know what the Elves have been up to. Today I would like you to think about what Jas, Pepper and Clary have been doing. Create a story map of two or three things they could be doing together, drawing and writing your ideas - remember to put as much detail in as you can. Make sure they are wearing the new outfits you designed. Draw a heart and write feeling words for each of the Elves to show how they feel about what they have been doing. Connect each idea up with an arrow a bit like a story. This will help you with your letter back to Mr and Mrs Cobbler, which we will start tomorrow.

Maths - Flashback 4 warmup. This maths is about multiplication sentences using the x symbol. Remember to click on the video BEFORE you do the task as this will help you.

Purple Mash reading - I have set a 'To Do' for each day for a chapter story and quiz. This week's story is called 'Sam and the Wet day'. Have a go and I will comment on your quiz score.

Science - The Elves from our story need your help! Put on your science hat and be an investigator. They need your help to find the best waterproof material for a new umbrella. The sheet, if you wish to print it, is in the Elves and the Shoemaker pack as a PDF from last week. Don't worry if you can't print it out, write your ideas in your home learning book.

If you need a new book please email me so I can arrange for you to collect one from school. Please do send me an email just to say hello again this week so I know that you are safe and of course if you need anything at all. Have a great day!

Home Learning photographs from week beginning 11.5.20

Friday 15th May 2020

Another week has flown by! I miss seeing you all greatly and if you haven't sent me an email this week to let me know how you are please get in touch today. I hope you all have a very lovely weekend and please stay safe.

English - A creative piece today. Have a re-read of the story so you are really familiar with it. Today you are going to design new outfits for Clary, Pepper and Jas the elves featured in the story. They each need new hats, suits and shoes. Send me pictures of your designs - I can't wait to see them!

Maths - Flashback 4 warm up. Today's maths is ready and waiting for you on Purple Mash in the form of games so I hope you enjoy these. There is one on multiplication and division, two on time and another using money.

PSHE - As we are missing our friends its time to have a recap on what makes a good friend. Today you are designing a friendship poster and I have given you an outline below and a word mat to support your writing.
