To all my Year 2 SWANs,
I hope you are all well and are continuing to look after yourself and your families.
I will be posting daily learning for you to access, that you can complete in your book and if you have any questions I am only an email away. Keep those photos coming in so I can see what you are getting up to.
Mix up the daily work by using the website links at the bottom of the page as this is also learning. Being outside and playing games, talking, reading and helping with things around the house are just as important. Work with the routine that best suits you as a family.
I miss you all so please do stay in touch.

Thursday 21st May 2020
English - Now you have written and edited your letter it is time to present the final draft. You could type this or write it and then decorate it in an Elf like way! Make sure handwriting is beautiful and take your time - just as we do in class. I look forward to seeing your final letters to Mr and Mrs Cobbler.
Reading - Chapter 4 of 'Sam and the Wet day' has been set for you on Purple Mash - no quiz with this one (not sure why!).
Maths - Flashback 4 warmup. Yestserday was 2 times tables and today is the 5 times tables. Remember to use the video link below to help you.

Enjoy the lovely weather too and take care.
Wednesday 20th May 2020
English - Now you have written your first draft of the letter from the Elves/Elf to Mr and Mrs Cobbler, it is time to read through it and check it. Use a different coloured pen to do this. Is the punctuation correct? Do you have capital letters and full stops, question marks or exclamation marks? Commas in a list? Plenty of description by using adjectives? Today is all about making your letter even better. All writers do this process and a writer is what you are!
Reading - Chapter 3 is ready and waiting for you on Purple Mash with a quiz. There are only three questions so make sure you read the text carefully.
Maths - Flashback 4 warm up. Today (alongside a video to watch) we are looking at the 2 times table.
Music - This has been set on Purple Mash and is called 'Making a beat'. There is a video on here explaining what to do which is in the top right corner just before the 'back' arrow. I look forward to hearing your beats!
Hope you all have a great day! I haven't had any pictures this week so please send them to me.
Tuesday 19th May 2020
English - Yesterday you developed a story map for your ideas to write a letter back to Mr and Mrs Cobbler the Shoe Makers. You were asked to draw out your ideas of what the three Elves could have been up to. Today we are going to use this to write out our draft for the letter. Pretend you are one of the Elves to explain what you have been doing. Think about the letters we have written before. Open the letter with a friendly starter, for example:
Dear Mr and Mrs Cobbler,
It is so lovely to hear that you have opened a new shop! How exciting! You deserve this because you have worked so hard.
You can then start explaining the Elves adventures in the letter. Can you include a question, commas in a list and plenty of adjectives? Make sure sentences open with a capital letter and they will finish with either a fulll stop, exclamation mark or a question if something is being asked. Make sure you close the letter properly too. You could end with a question. Remember this is just the first draft and tomorrow we will look at it again.
Maths - Flashback 4 to warm up. Today we are looking at using arrays. There is a video link below to help with this.
Reading - A 'To Do' is ready and waiting for you on Purple Mash and it is the 2nd chapter and quiz for the story ' Sam and the Wet day'. A special well done to Ethan and Gabriela who have done chapter 1!
Art - Rainbows are everywhere at the moment and I have set a rainbow challenge for you on Purple Mash. For those of you that are getting outside I have also set an art challege to create a picture using natural objects. An example is in the pictures below. Make sure you take a picture and send it to me for the photo section.
Monday 18th May 2020
Welcome to another week of home learning. I hope you had a lovely weekend!
English - On Friday you designed new outfits for the Elves in the story we read 'The Elves and the Shoe Makers'. Today there is a letter from the Shoe Makers below. They have now opened a new shop! Mr and Mrs Cobbler would like to know what the Elves have been up to. Today I would like you to think about what Jas, Pepper and Clary have been doing. Create a story map of two or three things they could be doing together, drawing and writing your ideas - remember to put as much detail in as you can. Make sure they are wearing the new outfits you designed. Draw a heart and write feeling words for each of the Elves to show how they feel about what they have been doing. Connect each idea up with an arrow a bit like a story. This will help you with your letter back to Mr and Mrs Cobbler, which we will start tomorrow.
Maths - Flashback 4 warmup. This maths is about multiplication sentences using the x symbol. Remember to click on the video BEFORE you do the task as this will help you.
Purple Mash reading - I have set a 'To Do' for each day for a chapter story and quiz. This week's story is called 'Sam and the Wet day'. Have a go and I will comment on your quiz score.
Science - The Elves from our story need your help! Put on your science hat and be an investigator. They need your help to find the best waterproof material for a new umbrella. The sheet, if you wish to print it, is in the Elves and the Shoemaker pack as a PDF from last week. Don't worry if you can't print it out, write your ideas in your home learning book.
If you need a new book please email me so I can arrange for you to collect one from school. Please do send me an email just to say hello again this week so I know that you are safe and of course if you need anything at all. Have a great day!
Friday 15th May 2020

Thursday 7th May 2020
English - The Magic Box. Now you have completed the whole poem. Three verses on Tuesday and the final verse yesterday. Now it is time to read it through and edit it. In school we use blue pen but you can use any colour that is different to what you have written your poem in. Can you change any adjectives to make them even better or add any adjectives? Today it's time to write up the whole poem into best ever writing. Maybe you could type it? Decorate it? Be as creative as you can. Can you perform your poem to someone else?

It is going to brighten up this week so enjoy some outside learning and playing.
English - Yesterday you made a list of nine of your favourite things, people and places. Now re-read the poem read last week (I have added this to the pictures below). You can use this as a guide to creating your own poem. Organise your nine ideas into three verses. Use the picture below as a guide. See if you can add adjectives (describing words) to give more detail and place a full stop at the end of each verse. We will do the final verse tomorrow. Normally I would be modelling how to do this so have a go even if you find it tricky.

Day 4 of home learning - hope you are all well and having a go at the work on your class page.
Writing - Read through your story so far about your creature - don't forget to use your story map to help you and edit with a different coloured pen/pencil. Check the punctuation and add adjectives to give detail. Remember to paint a picture with words for the reader.
SPaG (spelling, punctuation and grammar) - apostropes for contractions. Write the two words and the correct contraction.
Maths - before 'Home Learning' we were working on fractions in school so the next few maths home lessons will be on this. You don't need to write the questions out, just put today's date, title at the top of the page and then put the question numbers with the answers.
Science - draw the lifecycle of a butterfly then label each part in your book. Can you do the same with another animal?
Wednesday 25th March
Writing - It's time to use your story map! This will be done over the next three days. We don't write the whole story in school in one session so you don't need to do this at home. Introduce your first setting and the creature today.
Use plenty of adjectives and a variety of punctuation (question marks, exclamation marks, commas in a list and of course those all important capital letters and full stops). Can you use co-ordinating conjunctions (and, but, so, or, yet) and subordinating conjunctions (because, when, although, while, after) to extend some sentences? Just like in school, think, say and write each individual sentence. You can also edit in a different colour once you have written the first part of the story.
Reading - enjoy the nice weather and read a book. Talk about what you have read to an adult and think of some questions you would ask the author. If you want to you can write these questions down in your home learning book.
Maths - Lines of symmetry. Look at the pictures. Which have a line of symmetry and which don't. Why? You can draw these in your book. Now do four more shapes or pictures - two with a line of symmetry and two without.
Art - We particularly enjoy art in year 2 (this is my favourite subject!). You can choose one of these to do but if you want to do one each day then that's great. I have added a link to the Tate gallery website with other creative ideas for you to have a look at.
Tuesday 24th March 2020
Writing - Using the creature you designed yesterday, it's now time to take it on an adventure! Think about the settings (places) it could go. These could be real places or made up places - no more than three places. Draw a story map, in your home learning book, showing your character in these settings. You could label these.
Reading - If you have the story 'Jack and the Beanstalk' at home read this. I have placed a link where you can either read or listen to the stoy. Use the mixed up sequence of the story on the photos to re-tell the story. You will need to order them first! This is only a simple verson. Can you add more detail re-telling it aloud?
Maths - 6 in 6 to warm you up. Task 1 - missing numbers. Task 2 - addition and subtraction statements. What do you notice about addition and subtraction?
Write these in your book to answer them.
Monday 23rd March 2020
Please make sure you write the date in your home learning book.
Writing activity - design (draw and colour) your own fantasy creature in your home learning book. Describe it in sentences - What does it look like? (colour, shape and size) How does it move? What does it need for food? How else does it need looking after?
Make sure sentences have a capital letter to start and a full stop on the end. Challenge: Can you use commas in a list? Can you open sentences in different ways?
Reading activity - use one of your books to read and write about one of the characters in your book. What did they do in the story? Describe the characters feelings in the story. Write the title of the story you are writing about in your home learning book.
Maths activity - 7 in 7 starter. Part 1 - counting in 10s. Part 2 - using 10s to add and subtract. Write these out in your book.
You can use this form to ask Mrs Graham any questions you have about supporting your child to work at home.
Mrs Graham teaches in Year 2 with teaching assistants Mrs Marshall (mornings and all day on Wednesday) and Mrs Potter (afternoons Monday, Tuesday and Friday).
This is our class page where you can see what we are learning about and experiencing each term. There will also be useful resources to help you at home.
Our topic this half term is 'We are going to...meet some powerful people'.
Expectations in Year 2
Year 2 PE is on Wednesday and Friday.
Please make sure you have the correct equipment on these days (shorts/T-shirt/trainers/joggers for cold weather)
We have been doing some great artwork! Please go to the art gallery under the 'Children' section to have a look.
In science we have been learning about animal life cycles. We designed and made a book with Foundation 2 children in mind. Here we are sharing our books with the children in Foundation 2.
Christmas in Year 2.
We had lots of events in and around school over the festive period including: a vist to the Church to see ours and others' decorated tree's, KS1 Christmas performance to parents and carers, Christmas jumper day, Christmas fayre, snowman DT project, a visit from Magnus Swing Band, KS1 party, a whole school trip to see the pantomime and a parents/carers craft afternoon.
